The Law Foundation of Saskatchewan is a non-profit dedicated to enhancing access to justice for Saskatchewan citizens. Funded through interest earned on Lawyers’ Mixed Trust Accounts, the Foundation operates under section 76 of The Legal Profession Act, 1990. The Foundation awards grants to support legal education, legal research, legal aid, law libraries, and law reform. Since its beginning in 1973, the Foundation has distributed over $125 million for its legislated purposes.

The Law Society of Saskatchewan regulates the practice of law in the public interest. The Law Society is responsible for several appointment processes, including five members of the Board of the Foundation, pursuant to section 74 of The Legal Profession Act, 1990. Applications for appointment are considered and recommended by a Selection Committee and confirmed by the Board (Benchers) of the Law Society.

There are currently two vacancies for the Foundation Board, effective January 1, 2027.

Both Law Society members and members of the public may apply for appointment to this Board. Legal training or experience is not required.

The Foundation holds at least, four full-day meetings per year, usually in Regina or Saskatoon. Each meeting requires approximately one day of advanced preparation. Board members also participate in committee work, which is mainly virtual. Successful applicants can expect to spend a minimum of 15 days per year on Board matters. Some travel within the province is required.

Each appointment is for a three-year term, and appointees may serve two consecutive terms.

A Selection Committee comprised of members of the Law Society’s Nominations Committee, and Foundation representatives will assess applicants on the competency-based needs of the Foundation Board. Ideal candidates are impartial and independent-minded individuals, who are able to exercise sound judgment in the best interests of the Foundation and the public it serves. In addition, the following skills or areas of expertise are desired:

·        Access to Justice – Experience with, or knowledge of, Saskatchewan’s access-to-justice organizations, agencies, and issues.

 

·        Grant Management and Evaluation – Experience with grant-making, program evaluation, impact measurement, or funding oversight.

 

·        Governance and Strategy – Experience in organizational governance, leadership, management, or strategic planning.

 

·        Legal and Justice Expertise – Knowledge of or experience in criminal law, family law, dispute resolution, or related areas.

 

·        Financial and Investment Oversight – Experience in financial management, investment oversight, or financial governance.

 

The Foundation is particularly interested in applicants with financial expertise – accounting accreditation/designation and/or experience in financial management, reporting, and investment oversight.

Only candidates legally entitled to work in Canada at present and residing in Saskatchewan will be considered.
